PRINCE OF THE PAGODAS is a ballet by
Benjamin Britten and John Cranko. The story deals with Princess
Belle Rose's journey to the land of Pagodas after King Learish
complications with her father and her evil sister. There she
meets the Prince of the Pagodas, first a Salamander, at closer
look a presentable young man, takes him home, where they free
her father from her sister's imprisonment and live happily ever
after. We decided to keep a modern sense of fairy tale in both
stage and costume, refering to late medieval armour, early
renaissance painting and asian influences, as Britten's music is
partly inspired by Balinese gamellan.
